Available Bet Types

Apart from the sports and the events per sport, there is another prerequisite that must be offered to the bettors. The options that they have to place their bets on, otherwise known as markets or bet types. Here are some of the available options:

We are currently working as quickly as possible, on the necessary algorithms that will allow us to add more selections for our clients to place their wagers. It could very well be that the next time that you log in to your account, you will find that your horizons have expanded.

Types of bets

When people placed their first bets, it was rather simple. Which side in a confrontation would win. And that was all there was to it. Over time, things changed. Especially when the clubs that had access to lots of money invested heavily, while others did not. That meant that betting on the winner was no longer either fun or challenging. It became necessary to find other ways of making people interested in placing wagers on «something». Those ways became known as «types of bets» or «markets».

As usually happens in cases like this, their number expanded geometrically. At this time there can be hundreds of choices applicable to tournaments, competitions, events and sports generically or specifically. It is the main reason that caused the emergence of teams of professional tipsters that provide knowledge, research and insights for any and all sporting events.

As it stands, punters can bet on literally every single aspect. If it doesn’t exist in the offers of a sportsbook, they can make a suggestion at an exchange and wait for someone to accept it. Presenting them all would require lots and lots of pages, so, let’s try to summarize them up in groups.

General betting types

The following types of bets apply to wagers for all sports and events:

Handicaps

This is about the advantage given to the weaker side in any sort of encounter between two teams or individuals in any sport. There are two kinds: Asian and European.

Over/Under

In all sports there’s a score. This market places a limit on it. If the outcome exceeds this limit, it’s an over, if it doesn’t, it’s under. And it’s valid everywhere.

Odd/Even

Points, games, goals, whatever counts as a scoreline, comes up as either an odd, or an even number as a total at the end

Moneyline

Any sport is a battle between two. A moneyline bet says that one of the two will win, when the time comes to confront each other. However, it also says that one side will end up in a better position than another, at the end of a tournament or a competition.

Mix Parlays/Combos

This is not one market or a single type of bet. It’s a combination of the above that follows a set of rules. Punters can select at least two bets and place them according to the requirements. Those wagers can concern different sports and/or markets. Depending on the rules, either all of the selections must be successful, or a certain number from the total would be enough to win.

Tournament or competition specific

There’s only one type of bet that falls under this direction. The outright wagers. Before the tournament or competition begins, people bet on which side will win it. For example, before the next World Cup begins, bettors can place a wager that Brazil will win it. Before the next US Open in tennis begins, bets can be placed that Novak Djokovic will claim the title.

We mentioned that the wagers are placed before the event begins. That’s because it is the time when the odds are at their highest point. Outrights can be placed at any time during the course of a tournament, however, the offers will be different and most likely lower. The reason for that is the way that the bookmakers calculate the odds based on the chances for all the possible outcomes, taking under consideration the performances during the specific event.

Outcome specific types of bets

There are two reasons that this category is not under General:

Not all sports offer a draw

There are sports where both sides will score no matter what

In tennis, for example, the tie breaks make sure that there will be a winner and, while matches have ended in 6-0 wins in straight sets, there are no records that one of the two opponents have not scored a single point. Here, we have:

1x2

There are only 3 outcomes in a match that allows a draw. A win for the home side, a tie, or a victory for the visitors.

Draw no bet

It allows bettors to place bets on a side to win a confrontation but to get their stakes back, if the final result is a draw.

Win to Nil

This market is for sports where it is possible for one side to win, without the other side scoring either a goal, or a single point.

Double Chance

It allows punters to actually wager on 2 results. Either a win for the hosts and a draw, or a win for the visitors and a draw, or a win for either side without a draw.

Sport specific

The bulk of the betting types fall under this category. And the vast majority of those, of course, refer to football. Surprisingly, it is not the most popular sport for online betting. The number is such that, to make a decision on which bet on which market would be the most profitable, requires the use of betting calculators.

They will provide a payout based on the input of the required set of parameters. Let’s discuss about the standard markets for the 4 most popular sports that can be found in every bookmaker:

American Football

Total field goals
Point spread

Tennis

Play by play

Aces
Double faults
Net points

As you can see that’s about 50 markets on the board and there are many times more. While most of them are self-explanatory, some will need more research from a punter in order to understand what each one refers to. Each way in tennis for example is a bet that says that a player will either win a tournament or be a runner up. The people living in the United States may be quite familiar with the terms of their national pastime, however, the rest of the world may need a complete glossary of American football to understand what it is all about.

Another point to discuss, is that some of these markets are best for live betting. The play-by-play market places a wager on which side will win the next point. Which translates to a bettor needing to be watching the match to make that determination.

Betting type sub categories

All of the above can be separated and attributed to a single aspect of a match. As there can be thousands, let’s talk only about the major ones:

Handicaps

Every aspect of a match can have a handicap when one of the two opponents is considered as superior. The number of free kicks, the number of fouls, the number of goal kicks, the number of possessions, etc. Luckily for you, our Asian Handicap calculator helps you compute everything.

Over/Under

Single team
Home side / Visitors
Half time / Full time
Per game period
Per a designator
(number of corners, goal kicks, fouls, free throws, penalties, yellow cards, etc.)

Minute intervals

Separate the match in periods of 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes and bet on the events (over/under, handicaps, who, numbers, etc…) based on that time interval.

First/Last

Which player or team takes the first shot, scores the first goal or points, the first serve, the first rebound, etc… Same stands true for the last of each.

The bookmakers decided to satisfy the needs and demands of the punters, who, in turn, needed more options. Not to mention a better incentive for more profitable wagers. However, this process did not come without a downside. To make heads or tails out of everything takes quite an amount of time, effort and research. And this is the reason that the best betting platforms like ours, come to existence. To allow punters to decide quickly and with every piece of pertinent information at their fingertips.
