In our previous issue, we introduced you to the first part of our Warcraft 3 glossary, covering some of the terms that you need to know before playing. On this one, we will bring you the second part of our glossary, where we will cover gameplay and strategy-related terms, and some terms used in the Meta of the game.
Since we mentioned this term, time to explain it. Meta is actually an acronym and it means «most effective tactics available». Essentially it refers to the means and the ways that a player should use in order to achieve the goals in the most effective manner.
Gameplay and Strategies
The section has to do with the tactical decision-making and mechanics that players use to outmaneuver their opponents. Here are the terms you must know in this regard:
Creeping
Killing Creeps for Gold and Experience. It’s a good use of time when you don’t have enough information to attack your opponent directly.
Harass
Using a small number of units to do damage to the enemy’s economy.
Kiting
The process of attacking an enemy unit while moving away from it to avoid taking damage.
Dancing
A technique where you pull injured units back from the front lines, allowing them to heal, while healthier units take the brunt of the damage.
Spotting
Using a unit to provide visibility for your Siege Units. This allows them to attack from a safe distance..
Stutter-Step
An advanced technique where you issue move commands in between attacks.
Focus Fire
The process of having all your units attack a single enemy unit..
Rush
Early aggressive attack designed to catch the opponent off-guard. There are two sub-divisions here:
Proxy
Building structures outside your base, usually closer to the enemy. This allows you to produce units and attack faster.
Turtle
Focus on building defenses and rarely leave your base.
Map Control
This one involves the domination of key areas of the map to secure resource points and strategic locations.
Creep Jacking
Attacking an opponent while they are fighting Creeps.
Ot or o/tower (Offensive Tower)
Refers to building towers near an enemy’s base, usually as part of a Tower Rush.
Hero Units
Typically, one of the first steps to take before a game even begins, is to choose a Hero. This is the decision that will determine the course of the entire round. They are special, powerful units with unique abilities, capable of leveling up and equipping items. Since each of them has something different to offer, selecting a wrong hero may result to the loss of the game, if the opponent has chosen a much stronger unit overall.
Each tribe has different heroes and there are a lot of them. It would not be fair to bury them among all the rest of the references of the game. Therefore, we have decided to dedicate a separate section for the Heroes of Warcraft III.
Meta
The entire point is to be more effective than your opponent and make less mistakes. Here’s the terminology involved:
Perfect Play (PP)
Philosophy of playing with minimal or no mistakes at all, optimizing both macro and Micro management.
Micro
Short for “micromanagement”. It refers to your ability to control individual units effectively in battle.
Macro
Short for «macromanagement’. The process of expanding your base, managing your economy, building new structures, and training units.
Meat
Frontline units used to soak up damage during battles.
Tower Crazy
Refers to a player who builds excessive towers, often to the detriment of their army size.
Hero Trap Town
A base layout that is poorly designed, causing units to become trapped and unable to move.
Smurfing
Smurfing is when experienced players create new or anonymous accounts to play against less skilled opponents.
Warcraft III Glossary: Time to dive in
Basically, the two parts of the glossary should be enough to get your started on being able to watch a game on TV or live streaming and be able to understand what’s going on. The next part that refers to the heroes will probably also get you started on the desire to play the game yourselves. However, the road to becoming a champion of Warcraft III may be quite long.
