A Glossary for Warcraft III – Part 1

Warcraft III

The year is 2002 and it is the time that Blizzard Entertainment achieved the status of Legend amongst the game developers. The reason being the release of the first and most classic game of Warcraft. Now, 22 years later, it’s not just a pastime that is remembered fondly. Unexpectedly, it has become a member of the e-sports community with worldwide tournaments featuring the best players. And we say unexpectedly because compared to other games of the genre it’s quite older. Basically, it’s well past the time that a dedicated esports betting platform like BetSpider presented its basic notions, along with a glossary of its terms.

Warcraft III is a developing storyline

The main concept is similar to many other games. Settle somewhere, develop a race, fight the enemies and gain complete domination. Historically, the first edition had the title Orcs & Humans, while the second release, Tides of Darkness, is the one that effectively changed everything in the genre. Players can choose between Humans, Orcs, Night Elves and the Undead. Typically, every race presents unique units, heroes and abilities. However, the basic idea that changed everything is that the entire game is a deep storyline that develops through campaigns with a final big objective at the end.

Warcraft III came out to present radically different premises: a powerful world editor, the immensely popular Defense of the Ancients (DotA) mod, a role-playing element and a multitude of different editions and expansions.

Singles and teams

Contrary to games like League of Legends or Valoran, Blizzard’s creation does not have different roles for members of a team. Up to 12 players can play together and it’s a matter of communication between then on who does what. For example, one member can be responsible for the town and economy development, another member can handle technology advancements, while a third member can produce units. This is the reason that there are tournaments for both single players and teams.

Furthermore, there is a code of honor that is to be upheld at all times. Two of the most basic terms are:

GL HF:

Before a match begins, it’s a wish for «Good Luck, have fun». It’s the polite way to greet other gamers instead of a handshake.

GG:

While it began as an indication of surrender, «Good Game» became the staple of addressing everyone after a match has ended, regardless of the outcome.

Camper:

This is actually a derogatory term. It’s the polite way of referring to overly cautious players that stay around their initial settlement and build defensive structures excessively.

Basic Gameplay Terms of Warcraft III

Regardless of which version, expansion, campaign or release, it all starts with the most important building. For the human races it’s the Town Hall. The Orcs call it Great Hall. On a darker note, it’s Necropolis for the Undead. Or, the Tree of life for the Night Elves. It’s the first one to be constructed and the entire development of the game is based upon this building. Then, we have:

Teching, Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3.

The first one refers to the process of advancing technologically to unlock other buildings and acquiring more powerful units. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th terms refer to the levels of technological improvement that are available. Naturally, it’s a chain that needs to be followed. Upgrade one building to be able to build another that will allow a player to advance to the next level.

Hero.

This is the most powerful unit. For every race there are different heroes with different skills and characteristics. As the match progresses, they gain strength and experience and a player’s or a team’s strategies depend on them.

Exp.

To gain more resources and more units, players can build expansion settlements.

Map Control

Ostensibly, the whole point of the exercise is to gain control of key points. And that includes capturing the opponent’s expansion settlements or denying access to critical points that produce one’s own resources.

Fog of war

At the beginning of every match only a small part of the area is visible. The rest of it is dark and can only be revealed if units are sent to explore around. Keeping units around a key area does increase the visibility radius. However, it also reveals the existence of said area to the opponent(s).

Workers, Peons, Acolytes, Wisps

These are the terms that denote the most basic characters of the game. The ones whose job is to construct buildings and harvest resources. All of the development depends on their performance. If a player has them on idle then they are suffering a lack on their economy and technological advancement.

In the second part of the Glossary of Warcraft III, we will expand to the rest of the units that are necessary for winning a match, as well as the terms that refer to the various skills and features that make up the keys for more strength and ultimately the victory. Meanwhile, you should open an account at the ideal betting tool and begin the journey in the various tournaments that are available for betting.
